Nico, a distinctive black and grey kitten who was found as a newborn in the bonnet of a car was brought to GVC by his devoted owner after experiencing a sudden onset of unusual symptoms this September, at only 5 months of age. Nico had an unsteady gait, loss of balance, and troubling incoordination. Despite seeking answers elsewhere, no one had been able to diagnose his condition, and Nico’s quality of life was rapidly declining.
When Dr Sergio examined Nico, he recognized the seriousness of his symptoms and ordered a series of diagnostic tests, including X-rays and an MRI. The results revealed a complex and uncommon condition: Atlanto-Axial instability, a misalignment in the joint between the first two vertebrae in his neck. This rare diagnosis, typically treated with advanced surgery, presented a unique set of challenges—especially given Nico’s young age.
Atlanto-Axial instability is usually corrected with surgery involving small screws to stabilize the vertebrae. However, due to Nico’s age, this approach would have been too risky. His bones were still forming, and using screws on such a delicate, developing area could jeopardize the structural integrity of his spine in the long term. Given these risks, Dr Sergio devised an innovative solution: a dorsal suture technique, an alternative approach previously used only in toy-breed dogs. This technique would rely on special sutures placed to manipulate the muscles around the vertebrae, offering support to the unstable joint without placing stress on Nico’s developing bones.
Preparing for this surgery required lengthy planning, care, and collaboration. On the day of the surgery, Dr Sergio led a dedicated team that included nurses Nora and Carl, who carefully monitored Nico’s anaesthesia, and senior nurse Jonathan, who provided surgical assistance. Given the nature of Nico’s condition, the surgery required extreme patience, careful handling, and a deep understanding of both feline anatomy and surgical innovation.
The surgery went as well as could be expected, but we knew the real test was still to come – Nico’s recovery. While the surgery itself was a success, we needed to ensure the joint would stabilize as Nico healed. This required weeks of strict rest—a daunting prospect for any kitten, as their natural behaviour is to explore and play. His incredibly committed owner agreed to a detailed recovery plan, ensuring Nico remained as calm as possible whilst still allowing for normal kitten activities to give his tiny body the best chance to heal.
The recovery process was supervised with the same level of dedication as the surgery itself. Dr Sergio and the nursing team provided close follow-up care, managing Nico’s comfort and monitoring his progress continually. Nico’s owners were true partners in this process, showing immense patience and devotion to their kitten’s well-being. Nico’s strength quickly began to return. The first tentative steps soon became more confident, and before long, he was able to move with increasing agility.
Now, four weeks post-surgery, Nico has made an astounding recovery. He is back to his playful self—walking, running, and even jumping with the carefree joy of a normal healthy kitten. His once-limited movements are now free and full of vigour. Nico’s journey has not only brought joy to his loving owner but has also been a deeply fulfilling experience for our entire team. Dr Sergio’s pioneering work on this procedure, combined with the commitment of our team and Nico’s owner, has allowed this special kitten to live a happy, healthy life, free from the restrictions of his condition.
This journey reminds us of the importance of innovation in veterinary medicine. Nico’s story exemplifies what is possible when a dedicated team, supportive owner, and specialized skills come together to give a young life a fresh start. We are honoured to have been part of Nico’s remarkable journey and look forward to seeing him live his life to the fullest.
